UCCA President perspective...

New president, new editor, new website...

Same great community traditions!

President’s Report
Andy Freeburn, President
University City Community Association

Newsletter in color at your doorsteps again this October!

Just tell me what to do.

I liken the organizing of volunteers to herding cats. Trying to get someoneto commit to a task which they have no experience with is like asking them to perform surgery on themselves. Ergo, itis unfortunate that more citizens don’t take the opportunity to gain leadership skills by involving themselves withtheir local community’s volunteer organizations. Most of our neighbors want exciting events, useful projects, and desirable services for UniversityCity but are reluctant to participate because they feel a lack of certain management techniques.

I’m here to tell you, you can’t learnleadership from a book, on the Internet,or from a class. Most people acquire skills out of necessity and it is through challenges which we gain confidence to pursue greater feats. I believe we all endeavor to serve our community as long as it’s in a capacity which is comfortable and familiar with our abilities.

Alas, to learn to swim, you’ve gotto get into the pool. No one would argue that the shallow end is the bestplace to commence. Likewise, to get involved with community functions, you must first attend meetings, observe procedures, and assist a veteran with an event or project. Become aware of the tasks so that someday you’ll be able to lead the group or event. An organization always needs willing participants and once you take the lead, we grow and in growth, we achieve strength.

Please consider attending the next three monthly meetings of your community association every second Wednesday of the month, at the UC library on Governor Drive. Gain an idea of what causes are addressed and which may be of interest to you. You need not jump into the deep end but you’ll eventually learn that swimming is fun.

Thank you for supporting University City!
